  • Imperial Flagship

So, I managed to get my hands on the Lego Imperial Flagship (10210) on Tuesday, despite it not being available for at least another two weeks. For whatever reason, the Lego store in Orlando has started selling them early. Yes, it was an expensive night for me, because I also bought the Grand Emporium (10211) at the same time. Let me just say this: The Lego sets in the 102xx series are bloody expensive (though worth it). I am not amused with them releasing two of them so close together in time.

I worked on building the ship last night (and a little bit this morning), and I have yet to get up to the main deck. The keel is laid, the bow is complete, as is the stern, but the guns have not been laid in yet. The bowsprit I think is going to be coming up quite soon, as will a completion of the anchor windlass.

I should mention that the galley is complete, though I have to put together any of the minifigs… so it is not occupied with a cook at this time. There is a chicken roasting, though!

I was thinking of doing a pictorial log of the build, with minifigs and stuff working on it, but it doesn’t really fit the storyline that I want to present. Instead, I think I might get the pirate ship (Brickbeard’s Bounty, 6243) and do a pictorial of that getting built by normal folk, then right before the sails are raised, have a bunch of pirates come in and take over the ship, hence it becoming a pirate ship.  🙂  Just some thoughts, I guess.

I have some other plans that I am thinking about, once I have completed the Grand Emporium. The first is to see what kind of parts I have that I can use to put together a sailboat or two. I have seen one put together on the web that I really liked the lines of, so I am thinking I might emulate that a bit. Beyond that, I have plans to redo my city layout a bit so that I can incorporate the train. I also want to see about incorporating some of the buildings from Town Plan (10184) and molding them into the form factor of the modular buildings. In particular I am thinking of the garage and what can be done with it.

  • Lego Carousel – Part 2

OK, I finally finished the Carousel last night. It only took me about a week to build, spending an hour or two here and there on it. This was probably one of the more impressive builds I have done so far, and I enjoyed it throughly.

The build was made a bit harder because all of the parts were not very well ordered in the box. Basically there were a bunch of bags filled with the individual bits, and in order to do some of the steps, most of the bags had to be opened within the first hour of build time.

This creates a large pile of parts that you have to sift through in order to find the next part that you need to install, which increases the time it takes to build while you are hunting and pecking for the different bits.

One disappointment I had with this set was the stickers. I have started to loath stickers in these sets… not because they go on the pieces, because for the most part LEGO has been very good about keeping the stickers relegated to only one piece to stick on, and for the most part those pieces are items that are generally replaceable by generic pieces, thus not covering up a specialty piece.

No, what I hate is that in these large sets, invariably the sticker sheet gets crumpled up in the loading and shipping stages of the box, which means that very often the stickers are bent up and in some cases (like this one) actually no longer attached to the sticker sheet, but instead to either the bags or the box itself instead. I was able to salvage the stickers in this case, but I have had problems in the past where the stickers were so bent up that they no longer wanted to stick to the LEGO pieces any longer. Very disappointing.

The construction of the carousel is pretty solid, though the two non-horse elements of the ride do not hold on very well to the pole they are attached to. The horses are dead solid on their individual poles, and aren’t going to be falling off, but the sleigh and gondola are attached only via an antenna and 1×1 cylinder, which does not create a very strong attachment. I would have preferred something a bit more solid.

The little music box that a part of this set is a bit tinny, but in the context of it being a carousel it works pretty well. The motor that turns the carousel, on the other hand, is just too noisy, and something should have been done in the original design to cover up the motor more so that it would not be as loud as it is.

Despite these shortcomings, the set is really quite beautiful. I will get some pictures of it up sometime, if I I remember to do so.

  • Lego Carousel – Build Progress

Well… what can I say… this is an incredible build!

I do a bit here and there, then walk off and do other things… so far I figure I have put about six hours of work into it, and it still isn’t done.

The detail is amazing, with lots of very small bits attributing to the detail.  My only complaint about the set so far is the stickers, which I hate. I have started to hate them for a number of reasons now:

    • The essentially limit the use of the piece that they are stuck to.
    • Over time they either fade or fall off, though I do have some stickers on pieces that have been there for 30 years. (My Shell oil tanker comes to mind… though I haven’t ever pulled the tanker portion of that set apart in that same amount of time because of the stickers…)
    • Whenever you have a large set of stickers, or at least a large sticker sheet, invariably the sticker sheet has become crumpled during packaging and shipping. This is true of both the carousel that I am working on now and with Town Plan (10184) which had bent letters for the cinema sign.

  • Lego Carousel

Set 10196 has been released, or at least announced. It is a power functions carousel, about the size of Cafe Corners.

There is discussion on Brickset.com: http://www.brickset.com/news/article/?ID=290

There is also a nice set of pictures of it here: http://www.mybricks.de/treffen/obernau/fotos/index.php?action=showgallery&pfad=2009-Sets

From what I have seen of it so far, there are only a couple of things that I don’t necessarily like about it:

    • Stickers. Stickers are the bane of existence for serious Lego collectors, particularly when they span more than one brick. Over time, they lose their stickiness and start to fall off, and they pretty much set that particular brick for only one usage… that particular set.
    • The power functions elements (motor and battery box) should be better concealed… particularly the battery box. I think that some sort of switching mechanism for the battery box, like what they did with the AT-AT walker, would be really nice. I am seriously thinking of getting this set and dumping the battery box for the rechargeable Lithium Ion battery that is now available.

Overall a nice looking set that I think I will be adding to my collection.

  • Star Wars X-Wing Fighter

So, a couple of weeks ago, I picked up a Lego X-Wing fighter (set 6212). I hadn’t built it until tonight because of schedule and stuff, but tonight I sat down and put it together.

    Box
Really it is a quick build, only taking me about 90 minutes while watching an episode of Scrubs on the Tivo and a couple of other things.

The first thing you build is the X-Wing mechanical section. The only time I have ever seen one of these center gear pieces is when I built the ferris wheel (Set 4957), which was a real pain in the butt to build because of the fragility of the structure. My cat later destroyed it by knocking it over on a table.

    Mechanical Core

After this you build the four wings for the craft. Easy portion of the build, and a bit repetitious. It is interesting how they are going to have the wings expand out, however.

    Wings Attached

The next step is to build the nose of the craft, which is pretty straightforward, really. Once that is done, you simply snap it onto the front of the core of the aircraft and everything is done!
